Astrology claims that the position and movement of the sun, moon, and planets in astrology can symbolically represent, and thus foretell, the entirety of human experience. Centuries of ancient scholars correlated earthly events with planetary movements and specified the meanings of the different planets: the movement of Venus correlated with harmony, beauty, love, the decorative, pleasurable parts of reality, and Saturn, well, Saturn dealt with other topics…
Later scholars found that Venus was very effective at promoting its topics when it was seen in front of some stars (Taurus and Libra) and less effective when it was seen against others (Aries and Scorpio). And so on with the other planets. This effectiveness was called dignity and a beautifully balanced conceptual system evolved from it.

Planets in Domicile (Rulership) have all the resources they need to bring about their significations. Someone born with Venus in Taurus, for example, will have learned or been encouraged to appreciate beauty and to seek harmony, due to any number of factors, some of which may be counter-intuitive: e.g. exposure to conflict and anger can often show us the value of peace.
Planets in Detriment, on the other hand, often describe a lack of resources. Childhood experiences or ongoing situations that make it hard for us to access the feelings or concrete manifestations of a planet’s energy.
In my experience, feelings of powerlessness and dysfunction accompany the “lack of resources” represented by planets in Detriment.
Like why does everyone else know how to ____ and I don’t?
e.g. socialize/flirt/relax (Venus)
organize/speak clearly/focus attention (Mercury)
feel hopeful/commune/find opportunities (Jupiter)
There are way to remediate our relationship with these planets, but this can imply that we are doing something wrong. That our misfortune is our fault. On the other hand, if there is nothing we can do, it can make us feel hopeless, imprisoned by the stars.
I think there is a middle ground.
We may not be able to change the hard limits represented by planets in detriment, but we can adapt to them. While this can feel unfair, infuriating even, limits can serve as scaffolding that guide our growth and stimulate creative solutions.
This is not submission, or despair, this is amor fati, the embrace of fate.
